Title: Supporting
Legislation Providing a Sales Tax Exemption for Certain Flood Victims
WHEREAS, the April 2007 Nor’easter
dumped almost ten inches of rain within a 24 hour period in Northeast Bergen
County; and
WHEREAS, homeowners in Hillsdale
suffered devastating flooding downstream of the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir and
adjacent to the Pascack Brook; and
WHEREAS, the aftermath of the Nor’easter
storm caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to residents of
Hillsdale; and
WHEREAS, as Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk, New Jersey District 39, has introduced Assembly
Bill 1948, a bill that establishes certain sales and use tax exemptions for
flood victims whose homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by the
severe Nor’easter storm; and
WHEREAS, this bill creates a rebate
process for residents affected by a disaster can apply for a refund of taxes
paid on purchases of goods and services related to storm damages; and
WHEREAS, this bill makes the sales
and use tax exemption retroactive to purchases made and services rendered on or
after April 14, 2007 with the exemption remaining in effect through 2007; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, that Mayor Sapanara and the Borough Council
support A-1948 legislation and urge all District 39 legislators and State of
Council member |
